The most important equation in the whole course

It is Bloch's theorem.

Why would I claim this?

p.s. Only 1 out of 7 students included it in their formula sheet.
Is that because you all meditate on it and so feel no need to write it down?

  1. We all remember it of course!!

Its important because the assumption of periodicity is the basis of every (i think...) theory after Bloch model.

Without periodicity the world world explode with complexity!!! No xray diffraction(almost) and no general equations that apply to large classes of materials would be guaranteed.

  2. I had Bloch's theorems on a draft of formula sheet?

Of course we remember it (now)!

We had Paul's lectures on crystal structure - these crustals were all periodic.

We want a wavefunction to fit in the periodic crystal structures => periodic wavefunctions and potentials!!

Also, we don't want to explode
