Lecture Slides on the tight-binding method

You can download my lecture slides on the tight-binding method from here. We will probably start to cover this topic in this morning's lecture.

  1. This method of introducing a weak perturbing potential seems to be similar to perturbation theory. Where you calculate small perturbations to your ground state wave function in terms of the known Eigenstates of the unperturbed Hamiltonian. Perturbation corrections for such a system are known e.g. Sakurai p290-300. If we treat this system as a single strongly bound electron, why can't we just plug the (weak) interaction into the perturbation theory formula and look at corrections from there?

Ps This is by blog post, I cannot see how to write one on the main page.

  2. On the top left/right(depending on whether you are on the blogger dashboard or the blog page) there is a button saying "New Post." Press that and it should work. You have to sign in first though.

I'm not sure what you mean by plugging the (weak) interaction into the perturbation theory formula and look at corrections from there?
    Isn't that what we're doing?
